Global “Exchange”: A Lesson in Mathematics

Dear Parents,

This past week, our students enjoyed sharing their Holiday Traditions and Gingerbread friends during a Skype with students from our sister school.  We learned about their traditions of Three Kings Day and the Twelve Grapes tradition. 

This month, our students will be focusing studies on mathematics through lessons of cultural money and exchange.  Students should complete the research detailed below and the attached Euro addition problems.  Please have students complete and return work by Monday, February 3^rd. 

·      Research: Students should research U.S. currency and the European currency of Spain.  Two paragraph minimum.

·      Display: Students should display an image of the currencies of both countries through either printed copies or drawings.

On January 15, 2014 we Skyped with our friends in Spain to discuss our different ways of celebrating the holidays during December. We noticed differences and similarities in the way we all celebrate the holidays. We learned about their tradition of Three Kings Day which is celebrated on January 6 instead of Christmas which is celebrated in the United States on December 25. We also learned that on New Year's Eve they have a twelve grape tradition in which they eat a grape every hour until midnight. We have a student in our group that celebrates Three King's Day and we learned that some of our children have participated in the twelve grape tradition during Spanish class! We look forward to our next Skype with our friends in February.

Holidays around the World

We have had an incredible time with our enrichment project this month!  Our November Geography Projects were amazing and we had such a special experience Skyping with our new friends in Spain!  We were able to show them our projects and tell them about our school and country!  We look forward to “meeting” online again next month! 

For the December Enrichment project, we ask that your child complete a “Holidays around the World Project.”  Your child should follow the guidelines below and complete the project over Winter Break!  Students are encouraged to have fun and creativity is encouraged!  Completed projects should be returned on January 6, 2014!

Project Details:

1.    Create a Gingerbread Man.  A template is attached or students may create a Gingerbread Man of their choice.  Be creative!

2.    Over break, have your Gingerbread Man join you through your daily activities and as your celebrate holidays, have fun, or travel! 

3.    Document your holiday/winter activities by creating a traditional diary.  Photos and illustrations should be included as well!

4.    Please complete a minimum of five entries.  Examples could include: visit to Santa, leaving out milk and cookies, family dinners, New Year’s Celebrations, winter vacations, reading by the fire, etc.

"Meeting" Our New Friends from Madrid

This past week, our Lower Elementary students had a special online "meeting" with our new friends in Madrid!  Our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students were able to introduce themselves and share the research from their Geography projects.  It was wonderful to hear about the similar Montessori pieces of work in both the U.S. and Spain!
